A cassette or reel is not assumed compatible solely because it fits a machine or has a familiar tape width. Mould, broken shells, poor tape packs, old splices, binder symptoms and transport damage are assessed before a full run. Conditioning or baking is used only when appropriate for the tape stock and symptoms.
