What may be on a half-inch reel
Sony CV-series Videocorder systems pre-date the later EIAJ standard and are not automatically interchangeable with it. EIAJ became a widely used half-inch helical-scan approach, while European labels may refer to CCIR practice or a particular machine. Reel boxes sometimes carry only a programme title, so the recording date and originating equipment are important.

PAL, NTSC, colour and black-and-white
Many early systems were monochrome; later compatible equipment supported colour. Recordings can be PAL-family or NTSC-family depending on the country and equipment. A black-and-white display may be correct, or it may indicate incompatible playback, so the likely system is checked before the result is accepted.
The master should normally retain the original frame rate and interlaced structure. Optional deinterlacing or standards conversion can be supplied as a viewing derivative without replacing the archive capture.
Reel inspection, threading and recovery
The reel flanges, hub, tape pack, edges, leader and splices are inspected before threading. Old open-reel video can have loose winds, brittle splices, oxide contamination or binder problems. Playback equipment is cleaned and prepared for the likely format, and the tape is watched closely throughout the run.

The recording system, reel condition, running time, required machine preparation, repairs, conditioning and deliverables all affect the work. Clear photographs often provide enough information for a provisional plan, but an unknown reel may require a controlled test.
For several reels, include the reel diameter, box labels, approximate dates and originating organisation in a simple inventory. Similar-looking reels may still need different playback routes.
Packing open reels
- Keep each reel in its own box and secure it against sideways movement.
- Do not pull tape from the reel to inspect the recording surface.
- Retain loose leaders, paper notes and original box labels.
- Photograph both sides of the reel and the full box before posting.
