PAL, NTSC and SECAM video recordings

The cassette shape tells you the physical format; it does not always tell you the television standard recorded on the tape. Two identical VHS or Betamax shells can carry signals made for different countries and require different playback equipment.

Format and television standard are separate

VHS, Video8, Betamax and U-matic describe recording-format families. PAL, NTSC and SECAM describe television-system characteristics used with those formats. A UK VHS machine and an American VHS machine accept the same physical cassette size, but ordinary machines may not replay the other system correctly.

A tape being physically accepted by a deck does not prove compatible playback. Wrong-standard playback can produce rolling, no colour, distorted timing or no usable picture.

The most reliable practical information is where the recorder was bought and used. A holiday tape recorded with a UK camcorder in America is normally still the camcorder’s PAL format, while a tape received from an American relative may be NTSC.

Colour, black-and-white and false symptoms

A colour recording may appear black-and-white when replayed through incompatible equipment. It can also lose colour because the original signal is weak or damaged. Conversely, an early recording may genuinely be monochrome. The standard and source history should be considered before deciding that colour has vanished from the tape.

SECAM involves colour encoding differences that can produce monochrome or badly coloured results through an unsuitable path. Compatibility is confirmed for the specific tape format and recording; it is not safe to promise universal SECAM playback simply because one machine supports a related mode.

Native capture versus standards conversion

For preservation, the preferred approach is normally to capture the recording in its native frame rate and structure. A separate viewing copy can then be converted for a particular television, editing system or web use. Converting during the only capture can discard motion information or make later restoration harder.

How standards apply to different media

PAL and NTSC questions commonly arise with VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, Betamax, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, U-matic and Betacam. Professional digital formats may use more precise frame-rate and raster descriptions. Open-reel systems can also be tied to regional standards, and early colour or monochrome recordings may have additional machine-specific requirements.

Cine film itself is not PAL or NTSC, although a video copy made from film can be. Audio tape is also not a television standard unless it contains PCM data encoded onto a video carrier.

Information to include for overseas tapes

  • Country where the recording equipment was bought.
  • Country where the tape was recorded.
  • Camera or recorder model number if known.
  • Approximate year and whether the tape is an original or copy.
  • Any label saying PAL, NTSC, SECAM, MESECAM, 50, 59.94 or 60.
  • Whether previous playback produced no colour, rolling or sound without picture.

Can a PAL tape become NTSC because it is stored in America?

No. The recorded standard does not change when the cassette moves country.

Why is my overseas VHS picture black-and-white?

A standards or colour-system mismatch is one possibility. The tape may also be genuinely monochrome or have a weak colour recording, so the source needs assessment.

Should you convert every NTSC tape to PAL?

Not automatically. A native-standard master preserves more of the source characteristics, while a separate modern viewing copy can be made for compatibility.

Do you support SECAM?

SECAM and MESECAM compatibility is confirmed for the individual tape format and recording. Send the country, labels and cassette type for an accurate answer.
